Ryukyukoku Matsuri Daiko Hawaii originated in Okinawa in 1982, combining traditional Eisa and Karate forms with contemporary influences and music to create a new and unique taiko style. The club has grown tremendously and now includes chapters all around the world. Our own Hawaii chapter now includes branches Oahu, Kauai, and the Big Island. Ryukyukoku Matsuri Daiko's members are committed to working together to build and maintain cross-cultural friendships. We invite people of all ages and backgrounds to join us in exploring and perpetuating Okinawan culture through the art and spirit of taiko. In Japanese, we write our club name: 琉球國祭り太鼓ハワイ支部.
RMD Hawaii is honored to perform at public festivals and other events throughout the year. Please come see us perform!
We offer free beginning taiko classes through the Department of Parks and Recreation at the Salt Lake District Park.
Fridays, 7:00 - 8:00pm
Due to holidays or performances, there are a few Fridays each year we don't have practice. We recommend calling or emailing ahead just to be sure we know you're coming.
